A reiki treatment will help you to relax deeply and works at physical, mental and spiritual levels. On this page you can see photographs of what I get up to when your eyes are closed! This is my mum and I treated her with reiki through her treatment for breast cancer.

As you can see during a treatment you remain fully clothed, laying comfortably on a massage couch with a blanket to keep you warm if required. Peaceful music is played for you to listen to that will help enhance your relaxation.

How long does a reiki treatment take?

A treatment will take about an hour. Sometimes we will take the decision to shorten this time. This can be intuitive or can be agreed before we start. Before we get to the stage in the photos we will have a relaxing discussion to find out how you are in yourself and what you think the reiki may be able to help. I will take some notes and a medical history including details of any medication you may be currently taking. I will explain what I do during the treatment process. If we agree a reiki treatment is appropriate you will be asked to sign a consent form. These initial recordings will be our reference to see how things progress following treatment. You should allow around 90 minutes for your first reiki appointment.

Reiki in action
There is a traditional journey in a reiki treatment beginning at the head, moving down the body and legs to the feet. The client is then turned over and the journey is repeated to treat the back of the body.
Hand placements
You can see in the photographs some of the hand placements. In western reiki the hands are placed over or on sites on the head/body/legs to channel into energy centres called chakra. Also energy meridians or channels are used as points of entry to invite reiki to flow into the client. A skilled practitioner can use his intuition as to where to channel and for how long. He will feel how the sites draw on the reiki. This sometimes registers as a strong heat, the way we are told, our body interprets the Ki energy. Back of the head, over eyes, ears and throat are some of the basic hand placements. Reiki is channeled for around five minutes at each site before moving onto the next. If an area calls on a lot of reiki we can stay with hands in place for a long time. Over the heart centre, solar plexus, and bladder are other known chakra sites that are treated. The major organs and systems can be treated directly by moving the hands to channel over regions.

The root chakra is towards the base of the pelvis and opens downwards (imagine the petals on a flower). Therefore, hands are hovered near to this site or may be placed level with it on the hip bones, as I illustrate in the last picture on the page. All the other major chakra open forwards other than the spiritual centre on the crown of the head (upwards) which receives energy from the universe, we are told.

Grounding and Scanning
When you read around 'energy medicine' you will find that across the world there is belief in energies emitted by our planet and those received from the sky and universe above. The beliefs have become a part of buddhist medicinal practice, which, you will remember, have a strong influence in the origins of reiki. We are said to be influenced by the earth's energy field and universal energy (other planets) as well as the reiki universal life force energy.
An energy connection is made using visualization, to the stars above and the earth below. We should be interconnected to these energies and it is helpful in a reiki treatment to establish an energy connection. It all sounds a little strange, but you can feel subtle changes in your energy field when you make the connections. Grounding bonds, connects or locks us in to an energy field from the earth allowing energy to flow well.
Scanning is where the sensitivity of the reiki practitioner to reiki energy is used to detect where the client draws more from his hands. The hands 'scan' over the energy centres and channels and more reiki will be drawn from the hands of the practitioner to where it is needed most in the clients energy system. This scanning is one way to devise where best to treat the client in a session of reiki.

Reiki systems
As you may have read previously, as reiki spread from Japan so individuals began to create their own methods of teaching. Simply, the channeling of the reiki should be understood as the practitioner acting as a lightning conductor to allow the reiki to channel through him to the receiving client. It is not his energy. "There are many systems or reiki. They all are based on the same Reiki energy (since there is only one Reiki energy). They differ in the name (which is often trademarked), in the symbols used, in the attunement process (both of these normally being jealously guarded secrets) and in the details such as the hand positions used in treatments. All systems ultimately derive from the system originally introduced by Mikao Usui. How can reiki help me?
Descriptions of the results of reiki will tell you that a reiki treatment is soothing, relaxing calming and that it clears away stress and negative emotions. Reiki can do all of these things and it is perhaps best and easiest to think of results in this way. What is not so easy to grasp is the unseen or perhaps the initially undetectable. Reiki works with deep seated and often long held emotional traumas and can resolve difficulties that may manifest on a physical level but perhaps have a mental origin. Who truly knows the root cause of illness? If we look at ill health in terms of an imbalance of energy then the reiki puts that right. Reiki can help us resolve mental hardship by helping to find a resolution. One minute your problem hurts you greatly, the next after your reiki your perspective has changed. Things do not feel the same any more. We are beginning to feel better. And as time passes more change comes. That is how it works.

Can you treat any condition with reiki?
In theory yes. In practice I would always consult your G.P. as to his opinion on if in your present condition a treatment is appropriate. I have treated clients with muscle and joint pain, stress, depression, m.e., panic attacks, cancer. Reiki can relieve pain but you should not think for one minute that it will cure. If that were the case we could put the national health service out of business! The way reiki manifests in the body helps begin our resolution of a problem. Some effects are immediate others evolve with the passing of time. I will be adding a page on the science behind reiki to illustrate what the scientific community has been able to quantify through research.

What are Reiki Symbols?
During an attunement to reiki a symbol is passed into the energy system of the receiver by the reiki master. This represents a particular route through which he can guide reiki when it is channeled. A power symbol, literally says channel reiki here. A mental and emotional symbol asks reiki to address mental and emotional issues. A past and future and distance healing symbol can send reiki back or forwards in time and allow the sender to channel reiki over distance for distance healing of a client. The master symbol can be offered to allow the receiver to attune others. It used to be blasphemy to display the symbols - it was all closed shop! Now you can find them through any search engine. They are very similar to ancient carvings on Indian and Tibetan temples.

When giving a reiki treatment the symbols empower the reiki. Depending on the strength of the reiki to be offered to a client one, two or all of the symbols may be drawn over the client or visualised and switched on for use through the treatment.

The symbols are given ove the course of three separate attunements. Each attunement allows the practitioner to channel more life force - a bit like starting off at level one with a drinking straw and after master level three channeling through an inch diameter pipe.
