Welcome to the video page. I have tried to find some interesting clips to share with you, at this time covering some aspects of asana practice. I have been fortunate in my training to work with some teachers who have developed a practice similar to what you can see below. Lots and lots of practice and a dedication to persist in the face of difficulty is the hallmark of many of the practitioners you will see below.
Try not to be overawed and remember there is more to yoga than gymnastics. Think of all the other wonderful benefits you can find in the other seven limbs of yoga and don't fall into the trap of thinking someone can make you as 'good' as what you see below - they can't - you have to do all the work. IF YOU ARE USING IE 8 AND CANNOT SEE THE VIDEO BELOW SWITCH TO FIREFOX BROWSER THEN THE ACTIVE X SHOULD WORK.
B.K.S. Iyengar who can be seen in footage from 1938, is arguably responsible for the popularity of yoga in the West. He visited London in the 1950's to demonstrate and teach and has healed and instructed many thousands of students at his yoga ashram in India and worldwide. After devoting his life to yoga as a result of training he received as a sickly child he continued the lineage of the teaching of Krishnamacharya forming his own 'brand' of 'Iyengar' yoga. Truly devoted to yoga for the health of all people he exemplifies the
rewards for dedication to the guidance of Patanjali's yoga sutras.
David Swenson demonstrates Ashtanga yoga. Created by another student of Krishnamacharya, P. Jois chose a flowing style of practice, that we are told is closer in performance to his master's teachings, when he came to find his own path into teaching. Swenson is one of many Americans who traveled to India to seek out Jois at his Ashram, training with him through the several 'series' of asana that Jois created. It is a strong and very effective practice, connecting postures in a flow called vinyasa combined with the Ujjai pranayama breath and the use of bandha, internal energy locks. It builds a great heat in the body and has become extremely popular in the USA.
The Hatha yoga practiced across the world today owes a lot to the creativity of Krishnamacharya, Iyengar and Jois. But remember, there is more to yoga than asana. There are many many other masters of mantra, pranayama, meditation and all sorts of yoga's that don't receive or want the publicity or fame that comes with success. They quietly go about their business and help others.
